As part of Subtech's ongoing endeavours to give back to the community at large, we have researched a number of opportunities to do exactly this and are proud to advise all of you that we have identified a socio-economic development project that we would like to support during 2011.

Introducing the Thandizwe Pre-School

Some facts about the school:
  • It is located in the Maphephtheni Community near Inanda
  • It is meant to serve as a pre-school and currently caters for over 50 children
  • The building itself was donated by the Aaron Beare Foundation in 2004 but while the infrastructure is sound, it is clear that the facility is not being used for its purpose and, while clean, it has been somewhat neglected.

What is it that we want to do?
  • To provide the current pre-primary school with electricity for their electronic goods, i.e. fridge, stove. These are in place but cannot be used because of the lack of power connection
  • To establish potential leaders/educators/care givers in the community who can productively manage the crèche
  • To up-skill the above person/s for the development of the kids attending the crèche /pre-school
  • To meet the immediate basic needs of kids attending school, such as nutrition

Progress made to date: -
  • The teachers have all been sent on an ECD training course with TREE
  • Nelson Mandela Day on 18th July 2011 was utilised to start the vegetable garden on the school grounds (see below)
  • A new jungle gym has been erected on the school grounds
  • Donated Blankets for the school children have been deliver

NELSON MANDELA DAY - 2011

As Nelson Mandela celebrated his 93rd birthday, an intrepid Subtech team travelled to the Thandizwe Pre-Primary School in the Maphephetheni Community near Inanda Dam. In line with the call on South Africans to give 67 minutes (symbolic of the 67 years Madiba dedicated to the pursuit of freedom) of their time to a worthy cause, this team arrived at the Pre-Primary School, which has been identified as the Subtech Socio-Economic Project for 2011, ready to garden! In line with the objectives of our involvement in the School in 2011 (which include: to provide the current pre-primary school with electricity for their electronic goods, i.e. fridge, stove. These are in place but cannot be used because of the lack of power connection; To establish potential leaders/educators/care givers in the community who can productively manage the crèche; To up-skill the above person/s for the development of the kids attending the crèche /pre-school; and To meet the immediate basic needs of kids attending school, such as nutrition), the team set to work with much enthusiasm and chatter to plant some fruit trees, create a vegetable garden and conduct a general clean-up of the garden.

The team left the school some 3 hours later - hot and tired but content to have added some value. Our thanks to the team as a whole - Zipho Ntinganti, Funo Ndlovu, Thulani Mkhize, Celia Nyanar, Thulile Mvelase, Craig Heslop, Dave Turner, Duane Lackey, Danny Mkhize, Cynthia Mpungose & Mandy McGuire. And a special thanks to Engage SA - Marc Eslink and Jade Wilson - for their organization of the morning.
