Subtech believes that its human capital is its most important and distinguishing resource. The differentiating factor that enables the Company to remain a highly professional company and the market leader in the broad-based marine industry, providing unparalleled service is the skills and competencies of its people. The Company functions within an industry where there are recognised and documented skills shortages. It also provides a service that occupies a niche within a specialized environment and thus often seeks to employ individuals with unique and multi-factored skills and/or competencies.
In this section, we introduce you to 11 such individuals (of our 200 employees) who hold key positions within the Company.
Greg Raaff - Managing Director (currently on 'Special Leave' while riding in the Dakar 2012)
A professional engineer with a B.Sc Degree in Civil Engineering and a member of the South African Institute of Civil Engineers, Greg has been with Subtech since March 2001. Greg has extensive experience in the construction industry having worked for, amongst others, Frankipile SA as Contracts Manager and Group 5 Civils SA as Site Manager.
Neil Scott Williams - Salvage & Marine Director (currently on 'Special Leave' while riding in the Dakar 2012)
A founding member and the Salvage and Marine Director of Subtech, Neil is well known and much respected in the South African maritime industry. Having started off as a Navy Diver and gone on to complete his commercial diving qualifications, Neil has worked in the commercial diving arena - both on the operational and the training side - since the late 1980's. His own involvement in the operational and management side of salvage and rapid response dates back to 1996 and his knowledge and skills in this highly specialised area are much sought after.
Craig Heslop - Acting Chief Exectutive Officer
A Chartered Accountant, Craig Heslop joined Subtech in March 2004 as Financial Manager and was later moved, as the Company grew exponentially, to the role of Financial Director, a position he still holds. Craig offers Subtech a multitude of skills and competencies that relate to the complexities of conducting business internationally. A performance driven professional, Craig brings international experience in the FMCG and Construction sector to the team. Possessing a sound business acumen, coupled with a strong analytical ability, Craig has an ability for building and motivating a cohesive team.
Steph Hock - Engineering Manager
Marine & civil engineering field for over 20 years, Steph has a solid and enviable project participation and role player record. With work experience gained from the likes of PRDW, Murray and Roberts Engineering Solutions and Hochtief-Concor, Steph has been involved in the design or construction of, amongst others, the Durban Harbour Entrance Widening Project, the Durban Harbour Services Tunnel Replacement, the Port of Ngqura, the Kalifa Bin Salman Port, and the caisson gate of the Simons Town graving dock.
Franz Scholtz - Commercial Director
Franz joined Subtech as Commercial Manager in September 2005 from the Durban Harbour Tunnel Project where he had served as Project Manager. A professional Quantity Surveyor with a B.Sc in Quantity Surveying, Franz has an impressive track record spanning 20 years in the area of commercial/contract management and has worked for consultant firms and bigger role players in the construction industry including the likes of Murray and Roberts Engineering Solutions, Basil Read and Concor amongst others over the years.
Morgan Castle - Works Manager
Morgan's involvement in marine and diving related services began as a result of his 2 years of National Service, where he was a Navy diver. After this, having 'found his calling' in the ocean, he completed 2 years with SA Diving before travelling to the North Sea where he worked as a saturation diver for 5 years. Back in South Africa, he accepted a position as a shareholder in a diving company - a post he held for 10 years before spending another decade travelling the world as a professional captain on a variety of commercial yachts. Fortunately for Subtech, the tides have brought Morgan back to our shores, to take the reins as Works Manager of our head office.
Gert Muller - Acting Chief Operating Officer
Gert started his diving career in the RSA navy completing his 2 years national service in Namibia. He pursued his diving career by completing the UK HSE Part 2 in Scotland, to enable him working internationally in the Oil & Gas industry. His first experiences as a commercial diver were aboard a salvage vessel & working for South African Diving Services. Gert worked extensively throughout the Far East working for companies like DIVEOCEAN, SAIPEM and ROCKWATER, during this period he completed his Mixed Gas Saturation ticket in Marseille, France. He then returned back to Africa & joined forces with Subtech in 1997 focusing on operations & now heading up the O&G
Mandy McGuire - HR Manager
Mandy McGuire has a Master's degree in Industrial Psychology and is a registered Industrial Psychologist with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa. With over 15 years' experience in the Human Resources Field, Mandy joined Subtech in 2009 having spent the previous 8 ½ years at SMIT Amandla Marine where she finished off as HR & Crewing Manager. Mandy brings her professional qualification, her many years of generalist HR experience and her marine specific HR experience to Subtech.
Andre Krugel - SHEQ Manager
Andre is a registered professional in Safety and Quality with SAIOSH as well as a qualified IMS lead auditor. He began his Marine career as an inspection coordinator carrying out NDT inspections. He joined the company in March 2001 to carry out reporting on projects and started the now flourishing NDT department. He then moved into the SHEQ field in the first year at the company and has since then grown the department into what it is today. He implemented the IMCA approval within the group and can boast that we are now one of the very few companies in South Africa that are IMCA Approved.
Nathan Singh - Group Finacial Manager
Having qualified as a Professional Accountant (SA) in 2007, Nathan Singh joined Subtech in July 2009, in the role of Finance Manager. Nathan brings with him a variety of financial and commercial skills, gained during an extensive career, with experience gained within the Banking, FMCG and logistics industry. A dedicated professional, with sound business and analytical skills, Nathan has thus complimented and added value to the existing management team at Subtech.
